The first thing you will notice is there’s a major price difference between the two lenses. Nikon 24-70mm costs $500 more than Sigma 24-70mm. Sigma 24-70mm costs $1300. And Nikon 24-70mm costs $1800. They both are 24-70mm lenses but have this major price difference. The new NIKKOR 16-80 f/2.8-4 is sculpted from polycarbonate. Its older sibling, the NIKKOR 17-55 f/2.8, is a metal monster of a lens. The new lens’s satin texture makes the plastic body feel solid and keeps it from screaming, “Plastic!”. Rub your hands over it, however, and it definitely does not feel like painted metal. Below are our sharpness measurements at 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm. The next page of this review compares these numbers to the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 VR and 24-120mm f/4 F-mount lenses, but I’ll mention first that these are very impressive numbers, among the best we have seen so far on wide to normal range zoom lenses. This 70-200 FL is a huge improvement over the old 70-200/2.8 VR II from 2009 because it weighs less and focuses much closer. While the rated close-focus distances aren't that much different, older 70-200s cheated and didn't really go to 200mm at close distances. This new FL lens really is 200mm at close distances. But when compared to the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II or even the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, the new Nikon 24-120mm f/4 is going to add more “character” to the background, as strong lines and specular highlights tend to be rendered with a slightly harder edge. All reviews of the Nikon 24-70 refer to AF speed and reliability as being impeccable. Just ordered a Refurb 24-70 2.8 N (non VR) from Nikon USA. They have 10% off now and was able to get at equivalent to roughly 'Excellent' condition used price of most used retailers. USD1,350 for a Refurb 24-70 2.8 is pretty good I think. Photos OK to edit. Thom Hogan's 70-200 VR II review shows side-by-side image comparisons, and yesthe Nikkor 70-200 VR II loses a TON of effective focal length at minimum focusing distance at 200mm, where the VR II is actually134mm in measured, effective, real, actual focal length. Left to right: Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, 24-70mm f/2.8 . Strobist: SB-800 camera right and behind. SB-800 camera left and behind. SB-800 on floor aimed at wall, gelled red . 2 CTO'd LED flashlights aimed at the 14-24 and 24-70 to bring out the gold lettering (having an extra SB-800 for fill would've been nicer). Like the 16-85mm before it, the 16-80mm f/2.8-4 isn’t a big lens, all things considered. It seems appropriately downsized for DX. Compared to the 24-120mm f/4 FX zoom it most directly compares to for FX, it’s 0.7” (17.5mm) shorter and almost 9 ounces (230g) lighter. This is exactly what we wanted from Nikon, frankly. If you don't mind putting a big lens on the Z, an adapted AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR will scratch the f/2.8 itch while you wait for Nikon to release the native Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, which is Best 70-200mm f/2.8 Lenses Compared 22 April 2018 .
